Mary Ellen Mark (1940-2015) was a photographer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She studied painting and art history at the University of Pennsylvania. She began her career as a freelance photographer in 1965, and she received a Fulbright scholarship to stay in Turkey and take her photographs. This book is a collection of her photographs taken on Falkland Road in Bombay (now Mumbai), an internationally notorious red light district. She spent 10 years traveling extensively in India and developed an image of Falkland Street, where the streets are lined with old wooden buildings with cage-like structures on the ground floor, and the people who live there. I realized that I had a desire to capture life and emotions on film. Her works, which were made possible by the trust people placed in her as a photographer during her six-week stay, depict the daily lives of prostitutes that no one had ever seen before.
