The 10th Japan International Art Exhibition (commonly known as the "Tokyo Biennale") held in 1970, "Man and Matter" exhibition catalog. Starting at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the exhibition traveled to the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, and the Fukuoka City Cultural Center. Due to the turmoil caused by the student movement at the time of the Venice Biennale held in 1968, the event was postponed for a year, and it is said that major reforms were carried out, such as the abolishment of the national participation system and the award system. Art critic Yusuke Nakahara is in charge of planning and organizing the exhibition. It is said that two catalogs for this book were produced starting from the exhibition, one "before" and one "after", but this is the "before" one. Three pages are allocated to each participating artist, and experimental attempts are being made, such as having each artist freely lay out the third page. The selection of artists included 40 cutting-edge artists from Japan and abroad, including Arte Povera, Mono-ha, Conceptualism, and Minimalism. It is recognized as the first large-scale international exhibition to be curated in Japan, and has been highly acclaimed in later years. It is also very interesting that the cover design was done by Takuma Nakahira, who was involved with Provoke at the time.
