Herve Guibert (1955-1991), a French novelist and photographer, was born in 1955 in Saint-Cloud, a suburb of Paris. After working in a theater company, he failed the entrance exams to the L'Institut des hautes etudes cinematographiques and the school of performing arts. In 1973, he began publishing film reviews in magazines. From 1977 to 1985, he was in charge of photography and film criticism for Le Monde magazine. In addition to writing plays and novels, he also released a photo series, such as "Musee Grevin" in 1978. In 1984, he won a Cesar du cinema francais for "L'Homme blesse" (co-written with Patrice Chereau). After it became clear that he had AIDS, he published novels such as "A l'ami qui ne m'a pas sauve la vie", "Le Protocole compassionnel" and "Le Paradis" becoming the most radical embodiment of French gay culture. The "Suzanne et Louise" series, which featured photographs of his two great-aunts, was published as a photo novel in 1980, and many other photographs have been published, mainly in France. Many of the photographs feature Guibert himself, interiors, friends and lovers, constructing fragmented, theatrical narratives. He attempted suicide in December 1991, and died on December 27th. This book was published posthumously by the French publisher Gallimard. The text was contributed by the writer Jean-Baptiste Del Amo.
