In 1860, the expedition of the Prussian Kingdom Eulenburg Mission that arrived in Japan under national isolation. It was the first visit to Japan by the present-day Germany (then Prussia), and the culture of East Asia, including Japan, was depicted from their own perspective along with eight elaborate copperplate engravings. The author is Gustav Spies, a wholesaler who accompanied the mission as a plenipotentiary representative of the Saxon Chamber of Commerce. During this visit to Japan, Prussia succeeded in concluding the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and Russia, as did the other great powers, but it was also enthusiastic about other purposes, such as bringing scholars, painters, and photographers along. It seems that it was the first time in this country. The life-size writing style is attractive, such as the episode where the Christmas tree was decorated for the first time in Japan.
