In the summer of 2012, Viviane Sassen visited the village of Pickin Three, deep in the rainforests of the Republic of Suriname. The only way to reach the village is by canoe, which takes about 3 hours up the river. It is said that she met the Saramacca people, descendants of the ancestral Maroon who fled Dutch slavery in the 18th century, and was intrigued by them and their village. She considered her history linked to the history of Saramacca, which is isolated from the outside world and lives without water, electricity, roads and the internet, in its respective connections between Africa and the Netherlands.
