David Armstrong (1954-2014) was born in Arlington, Massachusetts in 1954. He initially majored in painting at "The School of the Museum of Fine Arts", a school adjacent to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. But soon he changed his major to photography after studying with Nan Goldin, his friend since the age of 14. In the late 1970s, he was considered one of the group of photographers known as the "Boston School", along with Nan Goldin, Mark Morrisroe (1959-1989), and Jack Pierson. Initially, his photographs were mainly portraits of men, such as his close friends and lovers, but in the 1970s he began to take soft-focus urban landscapes as well. This book is the first comprehensive collection of his works. The title is a quote from Ecclesiastes 12:6 in the Old Testament. It's a sermon on youth and aging, with the line "Or ever the silver cord be loosed". It maintains an exquisite balance between soft-focus landscape photos that are largely out of focus and portraits that are sharply focused. It is reminiscent of the sonata, his favorite musical form during his lifetime.
