American-born Richard Misrach began his career as a photographer in the early 1970s. Since 1975, he has mainly moved his base of activity to the deserts of the American West and is known for his spectacular works such as his photo series "Desert Cantos". This book is a collection of photographs taken from the byproducts of Hurricane Katrina, which hit the southeastern United States at the end of August 2005. He documents the damage caused by the hurricane in photos, including graffiti, spray paint, and phrases written by residents and rescue workers with crayons, chalk, and other materials that happened to be on hand. Sometimes menacing, sometimes desperate, sometimes darkly humorous, these words convey a unique human perspective on the devastation and shock left in the wake of this disaster.
