Herb Ritts (1952-2002) was born into a Jewish family with a furniture businessman father and an interior designer mother. Initially, he worked in furniture, which was also the family business, but he moved to the East Coast to attend Bard College in New York, where he majored in economics and art history. He then lived in Los Angeles, where he shot his friend Richard Gere, who was still an actor, and launched his career as a photographer. In 1981, he photographed Brooke Shields and was appointed to the cover of the magazine "ELLE", and later worked on album jackets such as Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" and Madonna's "True Blue". From the 1980s to the 1990s, he photographed numerous celebrities and became a fashion photographer of the moment. The Ritz exhibition held at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts from 1996 to 1997 attracted more than 250,000 visitors, and it can be said that his influence was enormous. However, in 2002, he died at the young age of 50 after contracting pneumonia due to a weakened immune system caused by AIDS. This book is a collection of photographs produced in conjunction with an exhibition that toured three locations in the United States from 2012 to 2013. The life and career of the Los Angeles-based photographer is introduced, along with an essay on his representative photographs and unpublished photographs.
