The area around the Claudia Aqueduct and the countryside to the south and east of Rome are described by artists as paradise. The special light, the fragrance of ancient Roman civilization, attracted many painters such as Claude Lorraine, William Turner and Camille Corot and photographer Joel Sternfeld was also captivated. The rolling plains of the surrounding plains and hills of the rural "Campagna di Roma" were only slightly occupied during the height of the Roman Empire. It has been devastated. Except for some medieval castles and towers and farmhouses built in the 19th century, no one lived in the area for more than 1400 years. However, in the late 1800s, Italy became a nation and Rome became the capital, and Campagna changed dramatically. Railroad and aqueduct arches have formed, and the suburbs have begun to invade the plains. Sternfeld's magnificent color photographs parallel the unique mix of past and present that Italian history has created, such as ancient tombs, villas, arches, and temples co-existing with apartments. By doing so, he is making a serious criticism of civilization. He hopes that the landscape of the area will be preserved.
