Xu Yong was born in Shanghai in 1954. He moved to Beijing with his family in 1965. He graduated from Henan Luoyang Institute of Technology in 1978 and then from Beijing Normal Institute in 1986. After graduating, he worked as an engineer for the time being, but after that he made a living as a photographer for an advertising company and as a photographer for TV advertisements.
